As with all consultations, Mr Eynon-Lewis will take a history of the complaint and specifically ask about possible factors that might be causing the problem. A general medical history will be taken and medication and allergies will be noted. Your voice will be assessed.

The larynx will be examined using an endoscope. This is an instrument that is used to examine the inside of the body. A lens system is used to transmit the image to the observer.

For the larynx, there are two different types. A flexible fibre-optic scope is a narrow tube that is inserted through the nose and a rigid scope consists of a straight instrument that is placed at the back of the mouth.

Both of these techniques sound uncomfortable but the examination is usually more straightforward.
